What Is Ceramic Coating?

What is Ceramic Coating?

The term “ceramic” has definitely gained a lot of hype, especially in the last 6-7 years. But what exactly is a ceramic coating? Here is a quick rundown of what a ceramic coating is. A ceramic coating is a long-term solution that can be applied to surfaces such as your paint, wheels, lights, and even glass. Its protection is measured in years instead of months. Anything measured in months is not a true ceramic coating.

Here are the benefits:

  • Superior UV protection. This helps to keep your finish from oxidizing and fading.
  • Chemical resistant. This helps to prevent etching from environmental contaminants, bird poop, and bugs.
  • Ease of maintenance. You’ll not have to wash your car as often and your car will stay cleaner longer. It also helps to reduce wash-induced swirls.
  • Amazing gloss!! That freshly waxed look is just a wash away.

Here is what  coating does not do:

  • Protects from rock chips and damage from road debris. If this is a concern for you, you should look at Paint Protection Film.
  • Prevent scratches. While a coating is generally harder than your clear coat, it does not prevent scratches. Can it help prevent scratches in certain circumstances? Yes.

Here are some common misconceptions:

  • “You’ll never have to wash your car.” You will still need to wash your car properly when possible. The coating does make the wash process far easier.
  • “You only need to rinse your car off to clean it.” This is a false claim whether your car is ceramic coated or not. Never just rinse a car off with water and allow it to air dry.
  • “It repels water spots.” While a ceramic coating helps to drastically reduce the chances of water spotting, they can still occur in certain situations.
