Detailing Debunked – Does clay barring remove swirls?

I had a client ask me the other day why the swirls in his paint were still there even after a clay bar treatment. And it really got me thinking….Over the years, I’ve heard this and similar statements multiple times. So does clay barring remove swirls? The short answer is…..no. The long answer is….. Absolutely not but wouldn’t it be super easy if it did?

While a clay bar is an abrasive, it’s not as abrasive as a pad with a compound or polish coupled with a machine. While at the same time; a clay bar can cause damage if used incorrectly. To the untrained eye, a clay bar can have this effect as it will remove oxidized paint and smooth your finish as it removes contaminants. Combining this with a fresh wax or sealant application can give the “illusion” of swirls being removed. This illusion is due to the increase in gloss and slickness present on the finish.

In closing, clay barring is a necessary function of your car care regiment and it should be performed at least once a year or more as needed based on a few variables such as how much your vehicle sits outside or near trees. If your car is ceramic coated, I would recommend consulting your pro detailer first as its generally not recommended unless absolutely necessary.
